18th-century silver tasting cup – Trévoux, maker Benoît Julien

- Period: circa 1740-1760
- Dimensions: diameter 7.4cm
- Price: sold
This antique silver wine-tasting cup is a remarkable piece from the regional silversmithing of Trévoux, in what is now the Rhône-Alpes region. It features a finely worked repoussé decoration composed of bunches of grapes, foliage, beaded motifs, and hearts. The handle is adorned with two facing duck heads. The base, hammered in the traditional style, bears three hallmarks of the master silversmith Benoît Julien , who was active in this town during the 18th century.
Until 1762, Trévoux was the sovereign capital of the principality of Dombes. Its independent jurisdiction allowed its goldsmiths to strike their own hallmarks, different from the royal standards. This autonomy gave rise to original and rare works, highly prized by collectors.
This wine taster perfectly illustrates this tradition, through the richness of its decoration, the quality of the repoussé work, and the rarity of its provenance. It is an object that is both utilitarian and symbolic, formerly used for tasting and appreciating wines.
