This antique golf club is a magnificent testament to the history of the sport at the turn of the 20th century.
It is a wood , recognizable by its large persimmon (American ebony) head reinforced on the sole by a screwed metal plate. The shaft is made of hickory, an American ash known for its flexibility and strength.
The head still bears its original engraving: the words “Warranted” and a cursive signature of the manufacturer, unfortunately partially erased, but which links this club to the renowned Scottish and English workshops which then produced for large stores and players.
What is hickory?
Hickory is an American ash ( Carya ), imported into Europe in the 19th century .
- Its flexibility and resilience made it the ideal material for club shafts, capable of absorbing the shock of the ball.
- This period (circa 1870–1935) is known as the golden age of hickory golf , before steel took hold.
- Hickory Golf competitions where only this historic type of equipment is played.
