Boulle marquetry writing box

Napoleon III – 19th century

A small, precious, elegant and refined box, made in Boulle marquetry (brass inlaid on red-tinted tortoiseshell), in the sumptuous style of Louis XIV brought back into fashion under Napoleon III.

Its delicate proportions make it an easy object to integrate into a contemporary or classic interior, while retaining a strong decorative presence.

The decoration, composed of finely chiseled scrolls, captures the light thanks to the contrasts between the gilded brass and the warm depth of the tortoiseshell.

Opening the box reveals a compartmentalized interior of blackened wood:

a space for an inkwell,
a concave surface for writing implements, and a compartment beneath a small lid with a knob. A small side drawer is also present. The box is highlighted with an ornate brass frieze, and an elegantly carved handle provides a secure grip on the top.

An object that is both decorative and functional, reminiscent of 19th-century writing rooms.
