Inkwell in marble era Louis XIV

Elegant inkwell cut in a block of Italian marble known as Ombria di Caravaggio , with beautiful brown vein, red and cream characteristic of this ornamental stone very popular in the classical era.

Rectangular to molded degrees, it has a central circular bucket dug in the mass, intended to receive ink, and two lateral compartments for writing feathers and accessories. The marble, both dense and finely polished, gives the whole a sober and majestic presence typical of the office arts under Louis XIV.

This refined object, both utilitarian and decorative, could have decorated a study cabinet or the office of a magistrate or a member of the nobility at the end of the 17th century. It testifies to the taste for noble materials and the refined architectural drawing specific to the classic French period.
