Large antique boat lantern decorated with painted sailboats

- Period: late 19th century
- Origin: Northern Europe, England or the Netherlands
- Dimensions: 52cm excluding chain
- Price: 750 euros
This large marine lantern immediately catches the eye with its hand-painted decoration depicting sailing ships on the open sea. Each cartouche tells a maritime scene in a spontaneous and lively, almost naive style, evoking the world of sailors and long voyages.
Made of painted sheet metal, it retains its original metal structure with its protective hoop and its engraved glass globe, designed to diffuse the light from a kerosene lamp. The perforated upper cap allowed for good ventilation, essential for its outdoor use, particularly on board ships.
With its generous proportions and original decorated glass globe, this lantern has a strong decorative presence. It fits equally well in a characterful interior as in a seaside setting or a cabinet of curiosities.
A beautiful object steeped in history, both utilitarian and poetic.
