Louis XIV period marble inkwell

- Era: 18th century

Elegant inkwell carved from a block of Italian marble known as Ombria di Caravaggio , with the beautiful brown, red and cream vein characteristic of this ornamental stone which was highly prized in the classical period.
Rectangular in shape with molded steps, it features a central circular inkwell carved from a single block, and two side compartments for pens and writing accessories. The marble, both dense and finely polished, lends the piece a sober and majestic presence typical of Louis XIV's desk furniture.
This refined object, both utilitarian and decorative, could have adorned a study or the desk of a magistrate or member of the nobility at the end of the 17th century. It testifies to the taste for fine materials and the refined architectural design characteristic of the French classical period.
