This delightful picture of the 17th century , made in wood on wood, represents Saint John the Baptist Child in a scene marked with sweetness and spirituality. Sitting barefoot, dressed in a sober tunic, he tenderly caresses a lamb, a Christian symbol par excellence. This gesture echoes his role of precursor of Christ, announcing the famous "Here is the lamb of God" .
The anonymous artist of this work demonstrates great sensitivity in the treatment of volumes and light, giving the subject a dimension both mystical and human . Subtly dosed chiaroscuro and the rich texture of pigments reinforce the emotional intensity of the scene. The whole is presented in a molded wooden frame whose patina underlines the historical character of the work.
