Small tortoiseshell, brass and lacquer box – 19th century work, in the Boulle style

An elegant small rectangular box (11 x 6 cm), decorated with marquetry of red tortoiseshell, gilt brass, and colored lacquer (blue, white). The lid features a symmetrical design of scrolls, volutes, and frames, echoing the opulent style of Charles-André Boulle's 17th-century creations.

This type of luxury item enjoyed great success in the 19th century, during the Restoration and the Second Empire, a time when enthusiasts rediscovered the Louis XIV style. Parisian and provincial workshops produced caskets, cases and small boxes, often intended to decorate a desk or to hold tobacco, jewelry or calling cards.

The reverse, made of fine wood, contrasts with the richness of the upper decoration. The cracks visible in the tortoiseshell and lacquer attest to the age and authenticity of the piece.

Technique: marquetry of tortoiseshell, brass, lacquer on a wooden core.
