Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy and the Port-Royal Bible: A major work of the 17th century
Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy (1613-1684) is a key figure in Jansenism and 17th-century French religious history. Prior of the Port-Royal Abbey, he is best known for having directed the translation of the Bible into French, known as the Sacy Bible or the Port-Royal Bible .
The adventure of this translation began with his brother, Antoine Lemaistre, who undertook to adapt the biblical texts into French from the Vulgate. However, dissatisfied with the style and accuracy of the work, Isaac took over the project and completed it. He took the opportunity to enrich the text with commentaries and explanations aimed at making the Scriptures more accessible to French-speaking believers.
This monumental work emerged in a turbulent context. Due to his ties with Jansenism, a theological movement opposed to the official doctrine of the Catholic Church, Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy was imprisoned in the Bastille from 1666 to 1668. It was during this period that he finalized his translation of the Old Testament. Once released, he continued his work until the complete publication of the Port-Royal Bible in several volumes between 1672 and 1696.
Despite the obstacles and mistrust of the ecclesiastical authorities, this translation was a resounding success. Its clear, fluid, and elegant style made it a standard reference for French-speaking readers well into the 19th century. It even served as a source of inspiration for Voltaire and other Enlightenment authors.
The edition we are offering for sale is a magnificent reprint adorned with over 150 illustrations, attesting to the prestige of this work throughout the centuries. A rare and precious copy, with its foxing, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of antique and/or religious books.
