Rolling Pin of the sailors

Victorian sailor roller in engraved blue glass - "love be true"

England, late 19th century

Rare and moving object from English maritime art, this sailor's roller - or Rolling Pin - is blown in a magnificent cobalt blue glass and engraved with the wheel of the sentimental motto "Love Be True" .

These objects were traditionally offered by sailors to their wife or engaged before going to sea, as a promise of loyalty. Suspended in the house, sometimes filled with salt to wear luck, they were as decorative as symbolic.

Unlike more frequent wood rollers, the blown glass models are now rare and highly sought after, especially when they have a preserved original engraving.
