Rustic wooden tankard – Mountain folk art – 19th century

- Period: 19th century
- Origin: Alpine regions
- Dimensions: 20cm high
- Price: 250 euros
Description:
This wooden tankard embodies all the simplicity and strength of 19th century rural folk art.
Made from assembled staves, like a small barrel, it is held together by an ancient plant-based hoop, made of root or willow. This type of construction, both ingenious and durable, was the result of the expertise of woodworkers and mountain artisans.
Its thick handle, carved from a single block of stone, gives it an almost sculptural presence. The interior, patinated by time, evokes everyday use — beer, cider or other rustic drinks shared around a table.
An object of life above all, this mug testifies to a world where each piece was made to last, with whatever means were available but with real manufacturing intelligence.
Today, it naturally finds its place in a warm interior, a kitchen with character, or a collection of folk art.
