Set of 4 Enamelled sheet labels in the late 18th century

These enameled plates are labels of bottles or decanters originally intended to identify the different types of liqueurs, spirits or wines served at the table or kept in a buffet. They most likely date from the 19th century , in hand -painted enamel on sheet metal, often associated with bourgeois or aristocratic table services.


1. Label: "nucleus water" curved enamel plate decorated with polychrome flowers and red nets, typical of the 19th century. Registration in black letters: "nucleus water" .

The nucleus water is a liquor based on apricot or cherry nuclei, very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries for its bitter almond aromas. Petits visible flashes. Original suspension hole. Beautiful state of conservation of floral sets.


2. Label: "Sillery"

Ancient enamelled plate, hand floral decor, "sillery" inscription in black capitals. Suspension hole at the top right.

The Sillery is a champagne wine (from the eponymous vintage near Reims) particularly renowned in the 18th and 19th centuries. There were sometimes in the form of peaceful wine before the generalized advent of effervescent champagne. Belt state, net decor. Some scratches on the edge, trace of normal use.


3. Label: "Dry Madeira

Plaque enamelled in sheet metal, decor of colorful flowers, mention: "dry Madeira" . The Madeira is a mutated Portuguese wine, here in its "dry" (DRY), therefore less sweet than the traditional Madeira. Served as an aperitif or digestive in the 19th century. Present several visible fisles and a shine around the suspension hole, but enamel preserved overall.


4. Label: "Cares"

Ancient enamelled plate with song song, hand floral decor, lettering "cheaps". Providing a regional name or old spelling for cherry liqueur, or abbreviation for "cherry brandy" (Kirsch).

It could also be a fault for "cherries", to be checked according to local uses of the time.


Notable bursts at the bottom and right, but readable floral decor.
