Silver wine taster, Lyon, 1777

Discover this superb silver tastevin, the work of an 18th-century Lyon silversmith. Once used by winegrowers and wine merchants to assess the color and clarity of wine, this utilitarian object has now become a beautiful collector's item.

The hand-hammered decoration, embellished with spiral gadroons and a central band of pearls, offers beautiful reflections in the light. The heart-shaped handle is finely engraved with two stylized snakes – an ornamental detail often found in Lyon silverware of this period.
