Ebony and hardstone travel cabinet | 17th century | Florence, Italy

- Period: 17th century
- Origin: Florence, Italy
- Dimensions: 28 x 28 x 78 cm
- Price: 7.500 €
This traveling cabinet is a rarity on the art market. It was used to transport jewelry, precious objects, or important or secret private correspondence. When closed, it retains its worn Genoa velvet covering, concealing the richness of the interior decoration—a deliberate choice to avoid attracting attention. Two pull handles are positioned on either side, the hardware is original, and a studded decoration can be seen on the top and front. This studded decoration may resemble the Medici family coat of arms. The interior reveals three drawers, one of which is simulated with fine ebony and bone veneer in the form of lambrequins on the upper section and front. The drawers, also with ebony and bone backgrounds, are adorned with hardstones and ribbon marble medallions. It is an Italian piece, probably Florentine, from the 17th century.
