Description

This oil on canvas belongs to the tradition of 18th-century interior decorations and overdoor paintings. At the foot of a rocky outcrop, a bear emerges while hunting dogs surround it. On the left, an archer dressed in Roman-style cuirass and equipped with a quiver draws his bow. On the right, a spearman carrying a spear wears a lion pelt, evoking the figure of Hercules. An opening towards woodland extends into the background beneath a twilight sky. The canvas is presented in an arched moulded and giltwood frame, highlighted by a bead frieze, whose form attests to an intended architectural integration.
