Description
This rectangular casket in solid carved walnut belongs to the production of Italian Renaissance cabinetmaking. Its overhanging lid is highlighted by a wide border decorated with palmettes and gadroons. On the front, a recessed central panel is framed by low-relief friezes displaying flowering scrolls and leafy motifs. A substantial moulded plinth, carved with scrolls and gadroons, forms the base of the piece.
The cut-out wrought-iron keyhole escutcheon is preserved on the front. Inside, the original hinges, consisting of articulated wrought-iron straps riveted beneath the lid, remain visible. The walnut displays a deep, aged patina, accompanied by the natural marks of time and old, stabilised woodworm holes.
