Description
This Delft tin-glazed earthenware pharmacy bottle is adorned with high-fired decoration in monochrome cobalt blue on a white ground. Raised on a footed base, its spherical body extends into a long cylindrical neck, terminating in a moulded collar beneath the lip. The principal face is animated by a shaped Baroque cartouche enclosing the phylactery « A. BORAGINIS. », for Aqua Boraginis, distilled borage water. Above, scrolls frame two confronted birds on either side of a floral finial. Stylised cornflower stems border the composition, while a satyr mask, flanked by interlacing motifs with tassels, accentuates its lower section. Height: 32 cm.
