Description
This sculpted and moulded terracotta fountain mascaron depicts the head of Silenus or a bearded Dionysian deity. Its theatrical expression, marked by wide-open eyes, a deeply furrowed brow and prominent cheekbones, belongs to the tradition of Italian and southern French grotesque mascarons. The gaping mouth, fitted with an imposing tongue and pierced at its centre by a circular opening, was intended for the passage of a water pipe. By its function, the work relates to the elements of a water buffet or garden basin. A draped torso or band falls on either side of the head. Dated to the 18th century and situated in Italy or Southern France, the mascaron displays a natural patina of use, surface erosion, slight losses and calcareous deposits attesting to partial immersion and prolonged exposure outdoors.
