Description
Large French Louis XVI-period wall-mounted barometer-thermometer, dating from the late 18th century, in carved and gilded wood. Its Neoclassical composition is surmounted by a substantial openwork ribbon bow, above a cascade of palms and foliage. Two instruments are set within the frame: on the left, a thermometer according to Réaumur; on the right, a barometer according to Torricelly, each presented on a plaque with a handwritten scale. The frame is articulated by mouldings carved with dart motifs, bands of paterae and rows of pearls. In the lower section, it flares into a console with foliate volutes, terminating in a cul-de-lampe with a chequered ground, centred by an antique-style helmeted mascaron. The whole retains a beautiful old gilding, with its usage patina and slight wear from age. Materials: carved and gilded wood, glass and calligraphed paper.
