Large Polychrome Majolica Bulbous Vase, Italy, 18th Century, with Antique-Style Warriors

Description

Large spherical glazed earthenware vase, executed in polychrome high-fired majolica. Its composition is inspired by 16th-century Venetian production, in the manner of the Maestro Domenico workshops. Two broad circular medallions stand out against a radiating yellow ground; each presents the profile of a warrior wearing an antique-style helmet. The cobalt-blue ground is animated with yellow and copper-green acanthus scrolls, punctuated by floral rosettes and delicate white volutes. Old restorations, with visible glued breaks on the body, are present. The whole retains a strong decorative presence, enhanced by the freshness of its enamels and its imposing dimensions.
