Description
Rectangular desk inkwell in veined marble, dating from the late 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV. Carved from a single block with natural shades of ochre, brown, red and cream, it features an architectural arrangement intended for cabinet use: a large longitudinal pen trough at the front, a central circular recess intended for the ink pot, and two side compartments for the pounce pot or accessories. The strongly structured body is encircled by a moulded cyma cornice and rests on four spherical pad feet reserved to the corners. The reverse retains traces of rough carving. The geographical provenance is France or Italy. The piece is in good original condition, with wear and slight chips from use; the removable interior pots are missing.
