Description
This pair of substantial two-light sconces is conceived as a double vertical trophy dedicated to Music and the pastoral arts. Executed in carved and gilded wood, they are topped by a ribbon bow holding a passementerie tassel. Their central decoration brings together a musette, a horn, castanets and a pan flute, intertwined with vine branches, bunches of grapes and pine cones. At the centre, the figure of the god Pan emerges in demi-bosse. In the lower section, an open music book surmounts a grimacing theatrical mask; the cul-de-lampe ends in a pendant with passementerie tassels. Two pierced and fluted scrolled light arms extend laterally to hold the bobèches. French work of the 19th century.
