Description

This pair of mahogany and mahogany-veneered letter boxes belongs to English furniture of the Georgian period, circa 1800. Their curved form combines a sloping lid with softly undulating contours and a crossbow-shaped front. Beneath the lid, the inner lid features a multi-pointed marquetry star, in light-coloured wood inlaid on a ground of mahogany stringing. The interior is arranged with several vertical compartments set out in tiers, intended for sorting correspondence. The brass fittings comprise a cut-out escutcheon on the front, chased hinges at the back and articulated carrying handles on the sides. The pair is in good condition and retains its original patina.
