Description
This pair of gilt and finely chased bronze candlesticks displays a rich ornamental repertoire in the Transition style. Each piece stands on a circular base with a shaped outline, decorated with radiating gadroons, acanthus leaves and matted bands. The shaped baluster stem with cut sides, fluting and lightly raised Greek-key motifs supports an architectural candle socket decorated with swagged garlands. The original removable drip pans, with shaped edges, are retained. The bright gilding highlights the precision and contrast of the chasing. Discreet perforations bear witness to an earlier conversion for electric lighting. Parisian work from the second half of the 19th century.
