Description
This small solid-oak treasure chest combines the robustness of a wooden case with the refinement of a wrought-iron framework. Its overhanging lid is centred by an openwork and repoussé plaque, decorated with acanthus scrolls and volutes. Openwork corner mounts and riveted bands complete the decoration. The front is articulated by two locks with vertical mounts, linked by confronted decorative motifs with floral cutwork. On the sides, sturdy bail handles are secured on ornate backplates. Beneath the lid, the strike plates and locking bolts remain visible. The original patina and pronounced grain of the oak highlight the ironwork of a 17th-century French chest.
