Description

Solid silver fish server, made in Dijon during the reign of Louis XVI, around 1775–1785. Its asymmetrical blade with an undulating outline is finely pierced with leafy scrolls, volutes and geometric motifs, surrounding an engraved decoration depicting a fish among reeds. The junction with the handle is formed by a baluster socket applied over a high-relief aquatic mask, while the original handle is made of turned and blackened wood.

The piece bears the complete Ancien Régime marks for the généralité of Dijon: the jurande mark, with the date letter « V » crowned by the Dijon town hall, the charge mark with the letter « P », the décharge mark and the silversmith’s maker’s mark struck in a lozenge.
