Description

This French still life, painted in oil on canvas in 1861, presents an abundant composition on a table covered with a fringed embroidered cloth. In the foreground, open peaches, bunches of grapes, a hollowed slice of squash and carnations form an arrangement attentive to the rendering of textures, light and materials. In the background, a porcelain ewer with double handles stands out against a scarlet drapery with deep folds. The work belongs to the tradition of genre painting under the Second Empire. It is presented in a richly moulded gilt wood and plaster frame, decorated with shells, clasps and foliate scrolls at the corners.
