Description
Rectangular travel writing desk in Boulle marquetry from the Napoleon III period. Its refined decoration on a ground of engraved brass features a tracery of interlacing motifs, scrolls and foliate rinceaux inlaid with tortoiseshell, directly inspired by the ornamental repertoire of Jean Bérain. The case is framed with chased and gilded bronze mounts decorated with foliate friezes and surmounted by a hinged carrying handle with baluster-form elements.
The upper lid and the front fall-front open to reveal a perfectly fitted interior in ebonized wood: it comprises two glass inkwells with metal covers, a concave pen tray and a central compartment. The right side incorporates a sliding side drawer. A remarkable example of Parisian tabletterie from the second half of the 19th century.
