Description

Tyrolean marriage chest in painted polychrome softwood, dated to the late 18th century and originating from Tyrol, Austria. Its front is arranged in three moulded panels against a dark ground. The two side panels feature bouquets of stylised flowers in yellow, blue and white tones; the central section frames a cut-out wrought-iron keyhole escutcheon, decorated with red and ochre floral motifs. The projecting flat lid consists of a fir-green panel bordered by a bright red moulding. The natural wood interior retains its original side compartment, its long wrought-iron hinges, as well as the visible mechanism of the hasp lock beneath the lid. The piece retains its period patina and signs of use, together with a wrought-iron key.
