Description
This Peruvian devotional painting depicts the Virgin and Child under the title of Consolatrix Afflictorum, as specified by the Latin inscription at the bottom of the painting: “CONSOLATRIX AFLICTORVM O P N” — Ora Pro Nobis.
Associated with the Cuzco School and dated to the 18th century, the composition is arranged according to a pyramidal and hieratic structure against a dark background, between two ceremonial curtains with gilded folds. The Virgin, wearing a closed crown and covered by a veil, bears a rigid mantle adorned with gilded motifs executed in brocateado, as well as necklaces and pearls. In her right hand, she holds a stylized flaming sceptre. At her side, the Christ Child, also crowned, wears an embroidered red tunic, holds the terrestrial globe and makes a gesture of blessing.
The softness of the flesh tones, the richness of the ornamentation and the combination of European and Andean iconographic references characterize this Peruvian colonial painting. The work is presented in a moulded and gilded wooden frame.
